Embracing Your 40s: Navigating Change and Embracing Growth
Entering your 40s can be both exciting and daunting. It’s a time of significant physical and psychological changes, but also a period of newfound confidence and self-assurance. As women, we often find ourselves juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, but it’s also an opportunity to truly own our lives and embrace what makes us feel alive.
I was reminded of this recently on a trip to Vegas with an author friend. We went to see Kelly Clarkson (phenomenal, by the way) and had a blast—but we also realized something: our club days are officially behind us. Not because there’s anything wrong with that scene—if it’s your thing, live it up—but for us, these days, adventure looks a little different. Instead of late nights in crowded clubs, we took two unforgettable day trips: one to the Grand Canyon and another to Antelope Canyon. We toured, we marveled, we went to bed early, and we slept like babies. I didn’t feel one ounce of regret about skipping the lines for the clubs or the steep tabs at the bars. If this is aging, I’ll take it.
Part of that shift, for me, is menopause. The hormonal changes aren’t just physical—though yes, my body is changing in ways I can’t entirely control. My priorities have shifted, too. I have less interest in “pushing through” exhaustion for the sake of keeping up, and more interest in experiences that leave me feeling connected, energized, and genuinely happy. This stage of life is making me more intentional about where I put my energy and who I spend my time with.
Beyond the physical changes—like weight fluctuations or changes in skin elasticity—our 40s can be a time of profound personal growth. Each year brings more life experience that shapes our perspectives. We learn to set boundaries that honor our well-being and to prioritize self-care without guilt. We become more confident in who we are and less swayed by external expectations.
One of the best parts of being in this season of life is that we make choices with greater clarity. We know what matters to us, we invest in the relationships and opportunities that align with our values, and we’re unapologetic about choosing joy over obligation.
So let’s embrace our 40s with curiosity and courage. Let’s see the changes not as losses but as recalibrations—opportunities to live more authentically. For me, that might mean marveling at a canyon instead of dancing till sunrise. For you, it might mean something entirely different. That’s the beauty of it: this is our time to define what fulfillment looks like, on our own terms.
